SibFU joined the project of enhancing the international competitiveness of the Russian universities

According to the press office of the Russian Ministry of Education, 6 new universities were selected to join the project of enhancing the international competitiveness of the Russian universities. The announcement appeared on October 26, 2015 on the official site.

The official statement says that the project "5-100", aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the leading Russian universities and strengthening their positions in the international rankings, has added 6 universities, which defended their programs of enhancing competitiveness during the meeting of the Expert Council of the project under the chairmanship of Dmitry Livanov, the Minister of Education and Science.

18 universities applied and presented their long-term development programs for their educational organizations during the two-day meeting at the Far Eastern Federal University on 23th and 24th of October. Following the discussion, the Council has selected programs of the 6 more universities:

  • Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University;
  • First Moscow State Medical University named after ;I. M. Sechenov;
  • Peoples' Friendship University of Russia;
  • Siberian Federal University;
  • Tyumen State University;
  • South Ural State University.

Representatives of Russian scientific and academic community, government officials, international experts in the field of higher education participated in the discussion, including:

  • Andrei Volkov, professor at the "Skolkovo" Moscow School of Management;
  • Igor Agamirzyan, General Director of the Russian Venture Company;
  • Lap-Chee Tsui, President of the University of Hong Kong;
  • Weifang Min, executive president of the Chinese Society of Educational Development Strategy;
  • Edward Crowley, President of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.

The final decision on the inclusion of the universities in the project and the amount of the subsidies given to the selected universities will be made by the Ministry within two weeks.

Currently, the project involves 15 leading Russian universities. Over the last 2 years in the project they were able to achieve significant progress inв the world rankings:

  • in September of this year, the nine of the universities participating in the project got into an annual ranking of Times Higher Education;
  • in October, two of the universities participating in the project were included in the top 10 of the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe & Central Asia.

The project of enhancing the international competitiveness of the Russian universities among the world's leading research and education centers (Project 5-100) was launched in accordance with the provisions of the Presidential Decree in 2012 as a tool to build research capacity of a group of national universities to strengthen their competitive position on the global market of educational services and research programs.

The winner Universities of the Open Contest for the provision of the state support successfully defended their programs to enhance competitiveness implying a series of activities, on which subsidy funds are directed. Those are the development of educational programs, the global level research and raising awareness of our universities in the world.

In addition to the inclusion of at least 5 Russian universities in the first 100 of the world rankings of universities, the main objective of the project is to create modern leading universities in Russia by the 2020 with an effective management structure and the international academic reputation, able to meet world trends and to respond flexibly to global change.
