Universiade Village 2019 project approved by FISU

Krasnoyarsk as a host city for XXIX Winter Universiade in 2019 has received an inspection visit from the International university sports federation (FISU). Siberian Federal University is one of the key players in preparation to this important large-scale event. No wonder that on 5 March the delegates from FISU called in SibFU where they were presented with the fundamental principles to organization of the Universiade Village-2019 at the SibFU campus.

The rector of Siberian Federal University Professor Eugene Vaganov said that the four basic principles were: simplicity, universality, functionality and student-focus. «The main task we considered when developing the Village’s style was the possibility of its practical implementation. It was essential to organize the place in such a way that it would turn into the Universiade Village at minimum expenses in some 10 days, and shortly after the end of the competitions would go on functioning as the university campus with no extra financing. This task has been fulfilled».

According to the FISU Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond, it is not his first visit to SibFU: «Universiade is not only about sports. It is about collaboration of many experts: engineers, doctors… I have already been to SibFU and made acquaintance with the rector. I am delighted to see that here in Krasnoyarsk the university has already done so much for the Games. Certainly, there is still a lot of work to be done in the 4 years and we rely on active participation of volunteer students».

The challenges concerning training volunteers and accommodating them on-campus were also discussed by the heads of the university and the sports federation. A new dormitory complex yet to be built in the second cluster of the Village is meant to accommodate nearly 5000 volunteers.

The first vice-president of FISU Oleg Matytsin says that a universiade is more than just competitions. «A universiade is an opportunity for students to socialize beyond the time of sports. Among all, it provides the most comfortable conditions for stay and communication between students from various cities and countries. I am sure that SibFU will succeed in implementation of this concept».

As well as meeting the University top management team Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond, Oleg Matytsin and the Director General of the Universiade-2019 Executive Board Maxim Urazov met SibFU students with whom they shared the experience of universiades in other cities and countries and the preparation for the Games in the Krasnoyarsk Region.
